Fancy Drink Umbrella Wreath

A few months back I decided to undertake a seasonal-wreath-on-the-door project (gotta give the boring apartment hallway some life!).  I decided my summer update would be this tropical drink umbrella installment.  I have been waiting to make this wreath for a awhile now, so today I hunted down the supplies and had a margarita/crafting afternoon!

Supplies:

  • 10″ foam wreath frame- $6.99 from Micheal’s
  • 2  24 piece packages of drink umbrellas- $2.99 each from Cost Plus World Market
  • Small piece of ribbon

This project was super easy!  I started by cutting about half the toothpick off the umbrellas so they went into the wreath easier.

Then just arrange the umbrellas around the wreath.  Also, at this point I suggest pouring yourself a margarita…especially if you are in the middle of a summer heat wave like we are here in RVA this week.

At the end I hot glued a small piece of ribbon around the wreath to make it easier to hang.  Start to finish it took me about 45 minutes (or one margarita and 8 Phoenix songs) to complete.  Pretty happy with the result!

Happy summer!!

Socal 2013

During the first of May, Lacy and I ventured to Southern California. This was the first time we have made that voyage since we were married nearly 6 years ago. We didn’t have many plans other than to visit with my brothers family. On our short trip I mainly wandered Southern California with an Olympus E-pm1 and a 14mm, it was fantastic!

Photography is something of a passion for me, though it comes and goes, however, I do find enjoyment in capturing the moment, creating a stillness to an otherwise chaotic world.

Here are a few samples from our last trip.

Meet Your Artisan #3: Blanchard’s Coffee Co.

I LOVE Blanchard’s! Sometimes, if I am out walking on the flood wall I can literally smell the coffee roasting. It’s great drinking coffee that was roasted a few blocks from my building!

Summer Reading

So, my high school English lit education was a little spotty (the only thing I remember is reading My Antonia for literally weeks straight) and my college lit class was strange (Rambo and Jurassic Park).  Now I am grown up and working in a bookstore, preparing for a summer surrounded by local high school students immersing themselves in Hemingway and Steinbeck.  So I decided to join in and make my own summer reading list.  I compared a couple of the local high school lists, included some classics I felt I missed out on, as well as some more modern books.  Then added in some things from my own ongoing to-be-read list.

So here it is…

The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time by Mark Haddon

Brave New World by Aldous Huxley

The Omnivore’s Dilemma by Michael Pollan

The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot

Kite Runner by Kahled Hosseini

Slaughterhouse-Five by Kurt Vonnegut

On the Road by Jack Kerouac

A Walk in the Woods by Bill Bryson

A Farewell to Arms by Ernest Hemingway

Cutting for Stone by Abraham Verghese

The Bell Jar by Sylvia Plath

The Giver by Lois Lowry

Tales of the Jazz Age by F. Scott Fitzgerald

I am planning to read these between Memorial Day and Labor Day but we will see how it goes.  There are already a lot of other books on my ever growing to-be-read list so I may have to do some prioritizing.  But here it is…my summer reading goal in writing!
